Leaded Free-Cutting Brass — EN Standard

CW603N Free-Cutting Brass

CuZn36Pb3 · DIN 2.0375 · EN 12164 free-machining rod · equivalent to UNS C36000

CW603N (CuZn36Pb3, DIN material number 2.0375) is a leaded free-cutting brass with 60.0–62.0 % copper and 2.5–3.5 % lead; iron and nickel are limited to 0.30 % each, tin to 0.20 %, aluminium to 0.05 % and other elements to 0.20 % in total, zinc balance. It is listed in EN 12164 (rod for free machining purposes) and in the EN standards for wire, profiles, hollow rod and tubes. Its copper range lies inside that of the US free-cutting brass C36000, its UNS equivalent; its lead window reaches 3.5 % where C36000 stops at 3.0 %.

Why choose CW603N?

The EN free-cutting brass with more copper

  • ▸Cu 60–62 % — three percentage points more copper than CW614N’s 57–59 %, with 2.5–3.5 % lead (CW614N 2.2–3.5 %)
  • ▸Equivalent to C36000 — its copper range lies inside C36000’s 60–63 %; its lead reaches 3.5 % where C36000 stops at 3.0 %
  • ▸Excellent machinability — with limited cold workability: the cold working of its UNS equivalent C36000 is rated fair
  • ▸EN product range — listed for rod, hollow rod, profiles, wire and tubes

Frequently Asked Questions

CW603N — common questions

What is CW603N brass?

CW603N (CuZn36Pb3, DIN material number 2.0375) is a leaded free-cutting brass: 60.0–62.0 % copper, 2.5–3.5 % lead, up to 0.30 % iron, 0.30 % nickel, 0.20 % tin and 0.05 % aluminium, other elements up to 0.20 % in total, balance zinc. It is listed in EN 12164 for free-machining rod and in the EN standards for wire, profiles, hollow rod and tubes.

Is CW603N the same as C36000?

They are equivalents, with one limit to check. CW603N’s copper range (60–62 %) lies inside the C36000 range (60–63 %), and both are free-cutting brasses with at least 2.5 % lead — but CW603N allows up to 3.5 % lead where C36000 stops at 3.0 %. A CW603N heat with more than 3.0 % lead is therefore not C36000; compare the EN 10204 3.1 analysis with the grade on your drawing.

What is the difference between CW603N and CW614N?

Both are EN free-cutting brasses with about 3 % lead: CW603N 2.5–3.5 %, CW614N 2.2–3.5 % (EN 12164:2024). CW603N has 60–62 % copper, CW614N 57–59 %; the EN limits for iron (0.30 %), nickel and aluminium are the same, while CW603N allows 0.20 % tin against 0.30 % for CW614N.

Which mechanical properties does CW603N have?

EN standards define its properties by condition: M is as manufactured, without mechanical requirements; R conditions give a minimum tensile strength — for example R400, with at least 400 N/mm² and 12 % elongation. For the other R conditions, the mill certificate states the values of the bar supplied.

Is CW603N RoHS compliant and can it be used for drinking water?

For RoHS, its 2.5–3.5 % lead is covered by Annex III exemption 6(c), which allows up to 4 % lead in copper alloys and is currently valid to 30 June 2027. For drinking-water contact it is not suitable: NSF/ANSI 372 limits the weighted lead content of wetted surfaces to 0.25 %. Lead-free options on this site include the silicon brass C69300 / CW724R and the bismuth brass C6802.
