Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CW614N and CW617N brass?
Both are free-machining leaded brasses; CW614N (CuZn39Pb3, ~3% Pb) is the most machinable (the 100% benchmark), while CW617N (CuZn40Pb2, ~2% Pb) is slightly less machinable but better suited to hot stamping and forging.
What does DZR brass mean?
DZR is dezincification-resistant brass — alloys such as CW602N and CW724R that resist selective zinc loss in water, qualified by the ISO 6509 test and required for many potable and buried applications.
What is the difference between machining brass and forging brass?
Machining brasses (CW614N/CW617N) are optimised for fast chip-forming on CNC and Swiss machines; forging and stamping brasses have the hot ductility needed to fill a die, so the grade is chosen by process as well as service.
What is an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate?
It is an inspection document, signed by the manufacturer's QA, certifying the actual chemical composition and test results of the supplied material against the specification — the standard traceability document for brass.
