Leaded Brass — UNS / ASTM B455

C38000 Architectural Bronze, Low Leaded

UNS C38000 · ASTM B455 extruded rod & shapes · equivalent to EN CW617N

C38000 is the low-leaded architectural bronze of the UNS system — like C38500, a leaded brass despite the name: 55.0–60.0 % copper, 1.5–2.5 % lead, tin up to 0.30 %, iron up to 0.35 % and aluminium up to 0.50 %, zinc balance (Copper Development Association). ASTM B455 covers it as extruded rod and architectural shapes; since the 2026 edition the standard also lists CW617N and CW614N. The limits of CW617N, the European forging brass, lie inside those of C38000 — C38000 is its UNS equivalent.

Mechanical & Physical Properties

Properties

Requirements for extruded rod and shapes are set in ASTM B455, and the mill certificate reports the values of the supplied lot. Material certified to both C38000 and CW617N can also be judged against the EN values on the CW617N datasheet.

Typical uses
  • ▸Architectural sections — door and window frames, thresholds
  • ▸Builders hardware — hinges and butts
  • ▸Extruded shapes
Why choose C38000?

The UNS grade for low-leaded extrusions

  • ▸ASTM B455 product — extruded rod, angles, channels and other solid architectural shapes — the same standard as C38500
  • ▸Pb 1.5–2.5 % — one percentage point below C38500’s 2.5–3.5 %
  • ▸Aluminium up to 0.50 % — allowed in C38000 but not named for C38500
  • ▸CW617N fits inside — the EN limits of CW617N for copper, lead, tin, iron and aluminium lie inside C38000’s

⚠️ CW617N’s limits (Cu 57–59 %, Pb 1.6–2.2 %, Sn ≤0.3 %, Fe ≤0.3 %, Al ≤0.05 %) lie inside C38000’s, so a CW617N heat meets the C38000 limits for those elements; CDA also requires copper plus the named elements to reach 99.5 %. A C38000 heat with less than 57 % or more than 59 % copper, or more than 0.05 % aluminium, is not CW617N — compare the EN 10204 3.1 analysis with the grade on your drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

C38000 — common questions

What is C38000 brass?

C38000 is the low-leaded architectural bronze of the UNS system: 55.0–60.0 % copper, 1.5–2.5 % lead, tin up to 0.30 %, iron up to 0.35 %, aluminium up to 0.50 %, balance zinc. It is supplied as extruded rod and architectural shapes to ASTM B455; typical uses are architectural sections, door and window frames, thresholds, hinges and builders hardware.

Is C38000 the same as CW617N?

They are equivalents. CW617N (CuZn40Pb2) allows 57–59 % copper, 1.6–2.2 % lead, and up to 0.3 % tin, 0.3 % iron and 0.05 % aluminium — all inside the C38000 limits. The reverse is not automatic: a C38000 heat with 56 % copper, or with 0.3 % aluminium, is not CW617N. Since its 2026 edition, ASTM B455 lists C38000, C38500, CW614N and CW617N in one specification.

What is the difference between C38000 and C38500?

Both are ASTM B455 extrusion alloys. C38000 has 1.5–2.5 % lead and allows up to 0.50 % aluminium and 0.30 % tin; C38500 has 2.5–3.5 % lead and names only iron besides copper, lead and zinc. The EN equivalent of C38000 is CW617N; that of C38500 is CW614N.

Does C38000 have published mechanical properties?

Requirements for extruded rod and shapes are set in ASTM B455, and the mill certificate reports the values of the supplied lot. Material certified to both C38000 and CW617N can be judged against the EN values on the CW617N datasheet.

Is C38000 RoHS compliant and can it be used for drinking water?

For RoHS, its 1.5–2.5 % lead is covered by Annex III exemption 6(c), which allows up to 4 % lead in copper alloys and is currently valid to 30 June 2027. For drinking-water contact it is not suitable: NSF/ANSI 372 limits the weighted lead content of wetted surfaces to 0.25 %. Lead-free options on this site include the silicon brass C69300 / CW724R and the bismuth brass C6802.

Can Brassland supply parts in C38000?

Yes — made to your drawing, turned, or hot-forged through our qualified forging partners and finish-machined in-house. Whether stock certified to C38000 is available for your quantity is confirmed at quotation; if your drawing allows it, we can quote CW617N, whose limits lie inside C38000, and show both analyses side by side. Series lead time is 3–5 weeks from the approved drawing, forged first articles 8–10 weeks.
