| Requirement | What the standard says | Clause |
|---|---|---|
| Product forms | Extruded rod C3604 BE (≥6 mm), drawn rod BD (1–110 mm), forged rod BF (≥100 mm); hexagon flare-nut rod BDN-SR. | Tables 1, 4, 5 |
| Condition | F — as manufactured; SR — stress-relieved after drawing (flare-nut rod only). | Tables 4, 5 |
| Acceptance, condition F | Tensile strength ≥335 N/mm², or hardness ≥80 HV — where hardness is applied, tensile strength and elongation need not be. | Table 4, note a |
| Flare-nut rod | C3604 BDN-SR for JIS B 8607 type 1 and type 2 flare nuts: across flats 17, 22, 24, 26, 27, 29 and 36 mm; ≥335 N/mm², ≥15 %, 70–120 HV. | Table 1 note c, Table 5 |
| Season cracking | Drawn rod (not O temper, not flare-nut rod) must show no cracks after the ammonia test: a test piece of at least 75 mm is held 50–100 mm above ammonia solution of at least 11.8 % in a desiccator for at least 2 h at room temperature, pickled at once in sulfuric acid of at least 10 % and inspected by eye — round bar up to 25 mm may instead be bent about 15° over an inner radius of twice its diameter. Test frequency is at the mill’s discretion (clause 8). | 5.5, 7.5 |
| Dezincification | No requirement for C3604. JIS H3250 sets dezincification tests only for C3531 and the lead-free RD grades — for example the immersion test of Annex A, maximum dezincification depth ≤200 µm. | 5.7, Table 9 |
| Diameter tolerance | Normal grade, or special grade for drawn rod, marked with an S after BD (BDS). | Table 1 note b, Table 10 |
| Marking | Standard number and product symbol on each package, bundle or piece, plus the size — the standard’s own example is JIS H 3250 C 3604 BDS-F, with a size such as φ10 × 2 000 mm. | Clause 9 |

C3604 is the free-cutting brass of JIS H3250, the Japanese standard for copper-alloy rods and bars: 57.0–61.0 % copper, 1.8–3.7 % lead, iron up to 0.50 % and iron plus tin up to 1.0 %, balance zinc. Rod in the as-manufactured condition (F) must reach 335 N/mm² tensile strength, or 80 HV where hardness is applied instead. Typical uses are bolts, nuts, small screws, spindles, gears, valves, lighters, clocks and cameras.
No — the ranges overlap without matching. CW614N (EN 12164:2024: 57–59 % copper, 2.2–3.5 % lead) lies completely inside the C3604 range, so a CW614N heat also meets the C3604 limits for copper, lead, iron and tin — but a C3604 heat with 60 % copper or 2 % lead is not CW614N. C36000 (60–63 % copper, 2.5–3.0 % lead) overlaps C3604 only between 60 and 61 % copper. Compare the EN 10204 3.1 analysis with the limits of the grade on your drawing before accepting a substitute.
Both are JIS H3250 leaded brasses with 57.0–61.0 % copper. C3604 is the free-cutting grade (1.8–3.7 % lead, iron up to 0.50 %) for machined parts such as bolts, nuts, small screws and spindles; C3771 is the forging brass (1.0–2.5 % lead) used for valves and machine parts. In condition F, C3604 rod must reach 335 N/mm² or 80 HV, C3771 rod 315 N/mm² with 15 % elongation. Both are also made as stress-relieved hexagon rod for flare nuts (BDN-SR).
B stands for bar (rod), and the next letter is the process: E extruded, D drawn, F forged. An S after BD marks the special, tighter diameter tolerance grade, and an N marks hexagon rod for flare nuts. After the hyphen comes the condition: F as manufactured, SR stress-relieved. “JIS H 3250 C 3604 BDS-F” — drawn C3604 rod to the special tolerance grade, as manufactured — is the marking example the standard itself gives.
For RoHS, its 1.8–3.7 % lead is covered by Annex III exemption 6(c), which allows up to 4 % lead in copper alloys and is currently valid to 30 June 2027. For drinking-water contact it is not suitable: NSF/ANSI 372 limits the weighted lead content of wetted surfaces to 0.25 %, and C3604 is not a dezincification-resistant grade. JIS H3250 covers those duties with other alloys — C3531 for dezincification resistance (still leaded), and the lead-free bismuth grades C6801–C6804 or the silicon brass C6932 (C69300 / CW724R).
Yes — turned and milled to your drawing in Jamnagar. Whether bar certified to JIS H3250 C3604 is available for your quantity is confirmed at quotation; if your drawing allows it, we can quote CW614N, whose EN 12164 limits lie inside the C3604 range, and show both analyses side by side. Every shipment carries an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate; series lead time is 3–5 weeks from the approved drawing.
JIS H 3250 C 3604 BD-F (drawn rod, as manufactured), or C 3604 BDS-F for the special diameter tolerance — the marking example the standard itself uses. The nearest EN grade is CW614N (EN 12164); the overlapping UNS grades are C36000 (ASTM B16) and C38500.Primary source: JIS H3250 — Copper and copper alloy rods and bars (JISC).
